Email Service Provider (ESP)

The software that stores your email list and sends email to it at scale, handling delivery, signup forms, and automation.

An email service provider, or ESP, is the software that runs your email list. It stores your subscribers, sends email to all of them at once, hosts your signup forms, and handles automation like autoresponders. It also manages the technical side of getting email into inboxes instead of spam folders.

You cannot simply send a campaign to a thousand people from a normal Gmail or Outlook account. Regular inboxes are built for one-to-one messages, and bulk sending from them gets you blocked fast. An ESP exists specifically to send at scale and to keep your sending reputation healthy so your email actually arrives.

Your subscriber list lives in the ESP
        |
You write one email
        |
ESP sends it to everyone and tracks the results

Beyond sending, an ESP shows you who opened, who clicked, and who unsubscribed, which is how you learn what your list responds to. Most providers charge based on how many subscribers you have, so the cost grows with your list.

Common examples exist across a wide price range, from free tiers for small lists to advanced platforms for large senders. The right one depends on your list size and how much automation you need, not on which one has the flashiest sales page.
