Affiliate marketing on TikTok is one of the most realistic ways for a beginner to earn on the platform, because it does not require you to build a product or hold inventory. You recommend something you believe in, someone buys through your link, and you earn a commission. Simple in theory. In practice, TikTok has some specific quirks about where links can and cannot go, and there are disclosure rules you genuinely have to follow. Getting those two things right is most of the job.
If you have not yet read how the underlying model works, the plain version is at /guides/how-affiliate-marketing-makes-money. This guide is about doing it specifically on TikTok.
The short version
You promote someone else's product in a video, the viewer buys through a link that credits you, and you get a cut. On TikTok there are two main routes for that link. The first is TikTok Shop's affiliate system, where the product and checkout live inside the app and tracking is handled for you. The second is an outside link, usually through your bio or a link tool, that sends people to a merchant or affiliate program off the platform.
Both work. TikTok Shop is smoother because the sale happens in-app and you do not manage your own links. Outside links open up far more products but require you to route people through your bio, since TikTok generally does not let you drop a clickable affiliate link straight into a caption. And whichever route you use, you disclose that it is a paid or affiliate relationship. That is not optional and, contrary to what people fear, it tends to help rather than hurt.
How it works in practice
The mechanics differ a little by route, but the money flow is the same shape.
Your video recommends a product

Viewer follows your link (TikTok Shop in-app, or bio link to outside merchant)

Purchase, credited to you by the link or the platform

Revenue
For TikTok Shop, you pick a product from the affiliate marketplace, feature it, and the tappable link rides along with the video. Tracking is automatic because the whole transaction is inside TikTok. The details of how those commissions are set and split are covered at /guides/tiktok-shop-and-affiliate-explained.
For outside links, the pattern is different. Because you usually cannot put a clickable link in the video or caption, the standard move is "link in bio." You point viewers to your profile, where a single link, or a simple link-list page, sends them to the product or program. This is clunkier than a tap-to-buy, and every extra step loses some people, so the video has to give a strong enough reason to bother.
A clearly hypothetical example
Invented numbers, shown only to illustrate the pattern. Not typical, not a promise.
Say you feature a product that pays a hypothetical eighteen dollars per sale. You make a video demonstrating it and reach a modest audience of, hypothetically, five thousand people. Because affiliate conversion is usually small, imagine half a percent act and buy. That is twenty-five sales, or four hundred and fifty dollars, from one video.
Now note what changes with the link route. If those five thousand people had to leave the app, go to your bio, tap out to a site, and buy there, you would likely lose people at every step, and the twenty-five could shrink. An in-app TikTok Shop link, with fewer steps, might hold more of them. The figures are made up. The lesson is real: every extra click between the video and the checkout costs you sales, so fewer steps usually wins.
What to do
Pick products you would recommend to a friend, and ideally ones you have actually used. Your credibility is the whole engine here. Recommend junk to earn a commission and it works exactly once, because the trust that made people act is gone afterward. Match the product to your audience first and worry about the commission rate second.
Choose your link route deliberately. If the product is available through TikTok Shop and fits, that in-app route usually converts better because it removes steps. If you want products outside the Shop, set up a clean link in your bio and keep the path from video to purchase as short as you can. Do not scatter your audience across ten links. Point them at one clear next step.
Make the video earn the click. Show the product solving a problem. A demonstration beats a description every time, and it gives the viewer a real reason to take the extra steps a purchase requires. And say plainly, in the video or on screen, that you earn from purchases. Audiences on this platform are used to it, and the honest disclosure often reads as more trustworthy, not less.
What beginners get wrong
The first mistake is trying to drop a clickable affiliate link straight into a caption and wondering why nothing happens. TikTok generally does not support that. You route through TikTok Shop's in-app links or through your bio. Fighting the platform on this just wastes videos.
The second is hiding the affiliate relationship because they are afraid it will scare people off. It will not, and hiding it can get you in trouble with both the platform and the rules that govern this. Disclosure is required and, in practice, honest creators tend to keep their audience's trust longer, which is the thing that actually makes the money.
The third is picking products by commission rate alone. A high payout on something your audience does not want earns you nothing. Fit first, always.
The fourth is ignoring how many steps stand between the video and the sale. Every tap, every app switch, every extra page loses people. The creators who do well obsess over shortening that path, not lengthening it. And they capture attention where they can, so that one interested viewer can be reached again rather than lost after a single video, which is the whole point of building something you own on top of the traffic.
