How Much Money Do You Actually Need to Start?
'Start for free' and 'you'll need an ad budget' are both true, depending on the model. Here's the honest breakdown.

"You can start for free" and "you'll need a few hundred dollars a month for ads" are both things you'll hear, often about the same opportunity. Both can be true. It depends entirely on how you get traffic.
The two real costs
Almost every online business has two kinds of cost:
- Setup costs, the tools to exist: a domain, hosting, an email tool, maybe software.
- Traffic costs, how you get people to show up. This is where budgets diverge wildly.
Setup is usually cheap. Traffic is where the number is decided.
Rough ranges by approach
Free-traffic path (SEO, content, organic):
Setup: low (domain + hosting + email tool)
Traffic: mostly your time
→ low cash, high time, slow
Paid-traffic path (ads):
Setup: low
Traffic: an ad budget you can afford to lose while learning
→ higher cash, faster, riskier
Exact prices change and vary by tool, so treat these as shapes, not quotes. The pattern is what matters: the model you choose sets your budget, not the sales page.
The budget nobody mentions: learning
Whichever path you pick, there's an invisible cost, the money and time you spend before you're any good. With free traffic you pay it in months. With paid traffic you pay it in ad spend that doesn't convert yet. Budget for the fact that your first attempts probably won't work.
What beginners get wrong
- Choosing a paid-traffic model with a budget too small to survive learning.
- Buying tools they don't need yet because a course recommended them (often as affiliate links).
- Assuming "start for free" means "succeed for free."
The honest answer
You can start most models for very little. But "start" and "succeed" are different questions. Match the model to what you actually have: if you have time but little money, lean free-traffic; if you have money and want speed, paid traffic can work, just size the budget for the learning curve, not for the dream.
