How Lead Generation Makes Money

Businesses will happily pay for customers. Lead generation is the business of producing them.

Lead generation gets far less hype than affiliate marketing, which is a shame, because the model is easy to understand and unusually durable.

The short version

You find people who want a product or service, and you get paid for handing those potential customers to a business that sells it.

Where the money comes from

Consumer needs a service (e.g. a roof repair)
  ↓
They find your page or ad and submit an inquiry
  ↓
Qualified lead
  ↓
Business buys the lead (or pays you per booked job)
  ↓
Revenue

The reason this works: a new customer can be worth a lot to a business. A roofer might make several thousand dollars from one job. Paying you $50 to $150 for a genuine inquiry that turns into work is an easy trade for them. Multiply that across a steady flow and you have a real business.

Two common versions

  • Local lead gen: you rank a site (or run ads) for a local service, "emergency plumber [city]", and sell the calls or form fills to a local business.
  • Affiliate-style lead gen (CPA): you send people to an offer that pays you when they take an action, like requesting a quote, even if no sale happens yet.

What you need

  • a way to generate traffic (usually SEO or paid ads)
  • a page that turns visitors into inquiries
  • a business (or an offer) that will pay for those inquiries

What it costs

Similar to SEO or paid traffic, depending on your approach. The extra piece is the sales side: with local lead gen you have to find and keep business clients, which is its own skill.

What beginners usually get wrong

  • Sending low-quality or unqualified inquiries, businesses stop paying fast.
  • Underestimating the client-relationship side of local lead gen.
  • Picking a market where the customer isn't worth enough to justify paying for leads.

Is it realistic?

Yes, and it's one of the steadier models because a single client relationship can last for years. It's less "passive" than it's sometimes sold as, you're delivering a service to businesses, but the demand is real and it isn't going away.
